• Royalties

From Lee Lofaso@2:221/360 to David Drummond on Tue Oct 8 02:05:51 2019
    Hello David,

Here is what a Kiwi living in the land of Oz has to say about
Fidonet. He explains it all so nicely, and so concisely -

Fidonet is not Internet Social Media. Each of those entire sites
is managed by one entity. Fidonet is NOT an entity - it is a
technical agreement by a bunch of individuals. We are all omnipotent
    - on our own systems only. You are free to implement a "no trolls" DD>>edict on YOUR system. You don't have that power on any others.

    Thanks for the [free] advice.

Do you have to pay me royalties every time you quote me?

Only if you have registered with ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC.
    Otherwise, no.

All thanks to 17 US Code Section 106, which holds that exclusive
rights of copyright holders are not absolute, noting the doctrine
of fair use creates important exceptions.

I am not making any of this up, as I quote from the source itself -

"... for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching scholarship, or research is not an infringement of copyright."

IOW, the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted
material for purposes of commentary and criticism. And basically for
whatever other reason/excuse one might think of.

So. There you go. Another author may make limited use of my own
    work without asking my permission.

Now. In regards to your original question about royalties.
Very few people even know what royalties are, much less how to
collect them. Even most musicians do not have a clue. So for
all the aspiring entertainers out there in FidoLand, here is
a guide on how to collect all the royalties you truly deserve -
