What is the problem with running OS/2 on a VM ?

nothing IF you can install it... it simply cannot be installed in all
    VM providers...

Which VMs does OS/2 not work on ?

we also know for a fact that some VMs made some changes which
explicitly prevented OS/2 from being installed... this back when m$
was a lot more active in causing problems and preventing competition
with their products... even some DOS command shell replacements ran
into similar tactics back in the day... DRDos being one that comes to
    mind first...

Are you running some exotic BBS setup that is too difficult to restore ? - or is the reason you want to bury Waldo's Place due to some deep rooted resentment held against the BBS ? maybe because you chose it over a woman, or perhaps conceded to wasting your life with OS/2.

I am thinking about running a BBS on OS/2 on VirtualBox.

What is the problem with running OS/2 on a VM ?

It's a pain in the ass to get it to install.

Can you be more specific ? do the drivers not detect the disk ? partitioning or format HPFS not work ? are there problems with sound, video or network connectivity ? the installation crashes ?

Aparently you never tried it, or you would know. 99% of the time after install before teh WPS loads it crashes. I only was able to get to load/run on VMWARE on v12 or lower.

From my little experience, OS/2 Warp only work on VBox. But eComStation
and ArcaOS runs great on Virtual PC with few tricks to adjust.

Works for me first attempt on VirtualBox 6.0.24. Bare metal install completed end-to-end in 15 minutes ("Easy installation" mode). It detected the PCNet-Fast III (Am79C973) NIC and everything.

So I say it works 100% of the time.

Works for me first attempt on VirtualBox 6.0.24.

now try it on other VMs... KVM/QEMU for instance... i'm sure there are numerous people who would be quite interested in seeing OS/2 or ArcaOS install and work out of the box in that...

If I was running a mission critical BBS and at risk of permanent hardware failure, then I would have virtualised it and rehearsed a DR failover. Not using a compatible VM because incompatible ones are preferred is a high price to pay for downtime, unless you secretly wanted an excuse to retire Waldo's Place.

I am conducting an initial analysis into the viability of running a BBS on OS/2 in a VM. Clearly, installing it on a VM is not a problem. Are there issues that prevent or make it difficult to run a BBS on OS/2 ?

I have ArcaOS running good on MS Virtual PC 2007. Has a few tips
and tricks to have shared folder and sound but works fine.

On Arca Noae has a tutorial (with erros) to install on Virtual Box,
    but i don't like VBox.

i don't care about other OS hosts than linux or hypervisors other than KVM/QEMU, really... that's why i specifically requested MJ to install OS/2 on it... if they can do it, then anyone can... so far, it has been nothing but
    crickets... kinda expected but

Is there any joy running OS/2 under QEMU? I have a home lab running on Proxmox, which uses QEMU as it's virtual environment. I'd love to load up my old OS/2 install on it.

i don't know... i've not been able to get the install to work properly... if i can find out what needs to be done, then i could possibly bring my original system back online but i don't care to fight that fight any more... i
already spent several days on it 3 or so years ago... i got no where then and i haven't seen anyone posting anything new about having been successful doing it with KVM/QEMU...

    i've found a few links:
    https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/QEMU/OS2WarpV3_guest

http://sites.mpc.com.br/ric/qemu/index.html (looks a bit outdated, but there are some tipsntricks which can be useful)

    https://gekk.info/articles/os2.html (preinstalled os/2 images for virtualbox. os/2 versions 1.1->4.5)

    https://virtuallyfun.com/wordpress/2011/05/15/qemu-os2-tcpip-networking/
here it says: "First of all OS/2 2.0 will not install in new versions of Qemu. I had to go all the way back to Qemu 0.9.0! "

somewhere i read that VT-x/AMD-V is needed when you are using os/2 w/ qemu.

under virutalbox it is running fine. i've never tried qemu, but with
lot of time i think it's possible :)
