From Andre Robitaille@1:154/70 to All on Fri Aug 21 09:32:49 2020
    Hi all,

I'm a bit confused by pulling in files over FidoNet. My hub, AFAIK, doesn't have file transfers setup, but I'd like to pull in the nodelist on a regular basis.

So would I just do a filefix request from another BBS, maybe one that advertises in the file advertisement echo? Does that file get transferred through the hub, or do I need to create some sort of direct connection to
    that node?

    Thanks,
    Andre

Most hubs (but not all) have a selection of file areas that you can connect
to. Usually we use Allfix or filefix to connect to those areas and once connected you will receive those files shortly after they are hatched along with a tic so you can move those files into your filebase and toss them on
    to connected links (if any).

So would I just do a filefix request from another BBS, maybe one that advertises in the file advertisement echo? Does that file get transferred through the hub, or do I need to create some sort of direct connection to that node?

File echoes and file requests are different things. You need a link setup to connect to and receive files from file areas.

That's not the case with file requests. Any node can request a file from a
node that supports file requests, no link is needed. My node supports file requests so you can request any file I have in my filebase from here.
Request files to get a list.

Different mailer work differently to create and send file requests. In my
own case I will create a netmail for the node that has a file I want with
the FREQ bit set and then pack that netmail and my mailer will request the
file from that node and if it is found there the remote mailer will send it
to me and I will find the file in my inbound after I have polled that node.

File requests are not routed in any way, you need to poll the node directly.

Hey sorry Andre, life has been... hectic here.

I want to switch over to a different TIC processing system here, but I just haven't had the time. It's about the same amount of work right now to set up a file feed as it is to switch, and set up a file feed with that.

Janis Kracht (1:261/38) is my uplink for files, I'd suggest contacting her. :) --

Same here. Just been sitting in the hospital for Etienne's appendectomy all week, and BBS traffic is a good match for crappy hospital internet, so
figured I'd try to test some stuff.

So no apology necessary at all. Gives me a chance to learn better how the
    file transfer work.

Hope everything goes well with the appendectomy! My sister-in-law had hers out about 8 years ago, just in the nick of time, apparently.
    Sending you well wishes!
