• building on FreeBSD 13

    From Gerrit Kuehn@2:240/12 to * on Thu Jan 6 12:47:02 2022
    Hello *!

Is anyone already running husky on FreeBSD 13? The ports version (still at 2019) is blocked due to compile errors in hpt. I just pulled in husky-all-1.9-source-20211014.zip and toyed around with it a bit, but it looks like there are still some issues. Before spending more time on this, I just wanted to ask around if there is already something available that works.

Ok, husky-all-1.9-source-20210724.zip is obviously in better shape. At least it compiles and installs after pushing away a few html doc issues. Is anyone working on the "official" FreeBSD port? A decent update would be great...

Didn't look into that for quite some time, but good point. ;-)
Well, I do have binaries meanwhile using an updated port setup, but they all refuse to find their config files (which are of course present)). :-(
Maybe I should start over again and follow the INSTALL file...

Hm, I found and fixed that one now: Somehow the new version has ~/fido/etc/husky has base location for config files while mine reside in /usr/local/etc/fido. Not even the -c switch on the commandline will convince msged to use a different path.

Maybe I should start over again and follow the INSTALL file...

That would probably be the a better solution (I spotted the updated path in huskymak.cfg meanwhile). As I was hoping for a quick way to move the system to new hardware (and OS), I just threw in another soft link for now. Looks like something is working, at least msged comes up and I can read mails.

husky-all-1.9-source-20210724.zip looks better, but also doesn't include the CFGDIR setting to user home... strange, that's the version I compiled before, but it still insists on getting it from there ?!

No. And FreeBSD is not mentioned in this version of huskybse/INSTALL.asciidoc. At that time it was made for Linux only. You should use this

The underlined is wrong. The idea is that libraries headers are not installed to $(PREFIX)/include and during hpt build they are taken from their regular directory. So it looks like you configured something in a wrong way. There should be no /usr/local/include/huskylib.

No, I set PREFIX to point to my user home, so I'd use just

    gmake install

However, it is already the build stage that fails for hpt. Looks like this is because is still pulls in absolute paths on all dependencies like so (just an example from hpt/Build/dep/carbon.d):

    hpt/Build/obj/carbon.o hpt/Build/dep/carbon.d : hpt/src/carbon.c /usr/local/include/huskylib/compiler.h \
    /usr/local/include/huskylib/UNIX.h \
    /usr/local/include/huskylib/typesize.h \
    /usr/local/include/huskylib/pstdint.h \
    [...]

All other programs have relative paths here. They build and install just fine. Just hpt fails.

Actually that's rather unlikely, because I removed the full tree and recreated the top directory. However, I had to restart the build a few times as it was missing pieces (like the perl build module) I had to install.
Anyway, I removed the whole tree again and restarted the build... and now it magically works.
So yes, looks like something was messed up with hpt, although I cannot really think of what it might have been.

Anyway, software is there now, thanks again! Let's do some testing...

Do you happen to know who is behind osharoiko@gmail.com?

    Googled a bit: Oleg Sharoyko

(Nobody with that name was ever in the nodelist)

    Bye, Wilfred.

Are Stas Degteff and Max Chernogor still around?

Max Chernogor left Fidonet in 2012. Stas Degteff is still in the
nodelist but he did not appear in any echo I read for a long time.

I remember both well from previous times (probably like 20 years ago ;-).
Just reviewed a few things on my old husky stuff on some machines and found that I must have known (but completely forgotten ;-) about the move to github. I even already committed to the github repo in 2018 or so, but I either renamed or removed that account (at least I cannot find any login data for it right now). Could you check if I am still on the team list (probably as "gerritkuehn")?

Do you happen to know who is behind osharoiko@gmail.com?

    Unfortunately not.

Maybe I'll simply file a bug report to trigger updates...

Probably. Another important hint is that he is obviously using FreeBSD on his system. That's our man. ;)
