• The Russian election

From Björn Felten@2:203/2 to All on Sat Sep 18 13:38:06 2021
This is incredible. The Russian people actually have the opportunity to remove Putin and his corrupt gang from power. And then Google and Apple caves in to pressure from the Putin gang and removes the very "Smart Voting" app that would help Russia in their attempt to get a Putin-free country.

What a shameful action from those two multibillion companies. :(

Great opportunity for sideloading some malware / spy app that pretends to be a voting app (and let you vote for the wrong candidate) ;-)

It's not just the Apple and Google affected.

"RKN issued a sternly-worded warning to firms including Apple
and Google, as well as VPN providers Cloudflare and Cisco, in
the lead up to the elections.

"Authorities say that the companies are helping Russians access
banned content in spite of orders to the contrary. Navalny's
campaign operations were branded 'extremist' and effectively
prohibited by a court earlier this year, and officials say that
'Smart Voting' is an extension of those activities.

You two are not trying to influence foreign elections are you? The USAians will hang, draw and quarter you if you do that.

Then again, that might be only if it is USA elections - carry on.

Yes. It is. Let's hear it from what a Russian poet had to say
about the matter, written in November 1823 -

"BEHOLD A SOWER WENT FORTH TO SOW"
    ~ by Alexander Pushkin

With freedom's seed the desert sowing,
    I walked before the morning star;
From pure and guiltless fingers throwing—
Where slavish plows had left a scar—
    The fecund seed, the procreator;
    Oh vain and sad disseminator,
I learned then what lost labors are. . . .
Graze if you will, you peaceful nations,
Who never rouse at honor's horn!
    Should flocks heed freedom's invocations?
Their part is to be slain or shorn,
Their dower the yoke their sires have worn
    Through snug and sheepish generations.

I really don't know why they keep them, Alexander. Maybe it's a lazy way to keep track of what apps you have installed? At least you could try and delete just one of them and see what happens.

On my Amazon Fire TV Stick there's a function that let's you delete the APK file after you've installed it, but I've never tried it on my smartphone. With 64G internal and 128G external memory it doesn't matter much.

Probably one should have the root for this.

No need for root for that.

Take, for instance, Google Chrome app. I know there is apk for it. But
how to find it? I could not find it using ES File Explorer Pro.

Chrome, along with most Google apps, use split APKs and it's also normally in the system partition.

The APK are needed for the app to run. You delete them and the apps won't run anymore.

Actually I mispoke. Some you won't need after install. Most you will though. The apk is both installer and executable.

When you download an apk and sideload it, you can delete the ones in the download folder because during install it's copied to /data/app/name-of-app usually.

Actually a not-rooted Android user cannot delete apks. No permission for
    this, I tried.

    Bye, Richard!
