• School Is Out

From Lee Lofaso@2:203/2 to All on Thu Feb 27 14:54:17 2020
School is out! At least in Japan. Ended in China quite
some time ago, as kids everywhere having no choice but to
stay home due to the coronavirus pandemic. But please,
do not tell that to US President Donald Trump, who tweeted
this "caronavirus" is nothing to worry about, as it is
fake news concocted by CNN to make him look bad.

How many countries does this coronavirus have to spread
to before WHO decides to officially call it a global pandemic?
We all know what it is without any official word from anybody.
But it would be nice if WHO would be at least a tad bit more
honest than the US President. Remember, people are *dying*.
    Including children, and babies.

The virus is mutating, and no vaccine is likely to be
available any time soon. At least one to one and a half
years away, at the earliest. Assuming a vaccine can be
    found at all.

The Japanese Prime Minister taking charge in his country
in ways that only Japanese can understand -

Japan shuts all schools to combat coronavirus

    Source: Financial Times

Every school in Japan will shut from Monday in an unprecedented move
that will affect 13m pupils and leave parents scrambling to find
childcare as the country steps up its fight against the coronavirus.

Prime minister Shinzo Abe urged all schools to close — a de facto
order from the central government — until the end of the spring break
on April 8 in an attempt to reduce social contact and halt the spread
    of the virus.

The order brings Japan closer to total shutdown and will hit an economy
already on the brink of recession as millions of parents are forced to
take time off work to look after their children.

“We need to place top priority on the health and safety of our
children, and take measures to stem the risk of many children and
teachers becoming infected through gathering for long hours every
day,” Mr Abe said after a meeting of the government’s antivirus
    task force on Thursday.

The WHO estimates about 9.150.000 child-deaths due to malnutrition ... that's an annual trend measured since appr.2001 ... meaning since 9/11 there were an estimated 173.850.000 ...

The combined military expenditure of the US for its campaigns in the MiddleEast would have been enough to eradicate hunger in the world ... which would empower people to start thinking about and dealing dealing more freely with other pressing matters such as international trade, education, woman rights, climate change, you name it. Of course, companies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed and others who are prime weapons producers (OK, Belgian FN also sells to the US military) have no business incentive promoting peace.

single motive: undo everything that his predecessor has accomplished. Including strengthening the defence against pandemics...

    ---
It infected 500 million people around the world, or about 27% of the then world population of between 1.8 and 1.9 billion, including people on remote Pacific islands and in the Arctic. The death toll is estimated to have been 40 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history.

    There is no known vaccine.

Israel has, or will soon have, the cure (vaccine).

    *****************************************************************************

    <yawn>

Donald Trump is saying the same thing. Only that it will be
the US that will soon have the cure rather than Israel.

A few weeks ago it was Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu who was
making the claim that Israel has, or will soon have, the cure.

That was the reference I was making in early February. Now
    it is late February.

The whole world is laughing at Donald Trump for being such
a buffoon. But this is no laughing matter. A school in the
USA has been closed today due to the coronavirus. While that
is just one school, in California, expect more schools to
    close in the immediate future.

President Trump cut the budget for the CDC two years ago.
Many who worked there have moved on to other things, and the
US is much less prepared than it was for such a disaster.
There not enough masks and other supplies, the CDC is sorely
understaffed and underfunded, there is no plan to deal with
    this emergency.

Those with mild infections may not show any symptoms. As
a result, many carriers have never been tested. This pandemic
is just getting underway. The beginning of what could become
the worst pandemic in human history.

You think the Spanish Flu was bad? You ain't seen nothin' yet.

Two months from now, when China's economy tanks, and people
drop like flies, you and the rest of the world will know those
homeless guys waving signs that read "Repent! Repent! The End
    Is Nigh!" are absolutely right.

"Read my lips, no new taxes" ... August 18 1988 ...

Bush spoke these words when he accepted the GOP-nomination for the Presidency. It also won him the Presidency that year.

With a Democrat controlled House as well as Senate he agreed to a compromise for the 1990 budget where several taxes were in fact increased.

Pat Buchanan in 1992 repeatedly mentioned this as an example why Bush "The Elder" was untrustworthy. Bill Clinton did the same in his campaign as the Democratic candidate and the failure to keep the 1988 promise is viewed by many as why Bush was defeated.

Personally I don't think he was a bad president. It's just that promise which would have been forgotten if during Desert Storm he had allowed US troops to continue to Baghdad and capture it ... that would have made him all but invincible during the 1992 presidential elections ... perhaps it also showed what a great humanitarian he was.

    Hello David,

And the tens of millions of his loyal followers?

Indeed. If they are still his followers, after his more than 16
thousands lies, they must have some severe language impediment.

    Well, they *ARE* USAmericans...

    Who dat?

    Cajuns were here first.

    Hello Bjrn,

My personal opinion? He will be re-elected.

I wouldn't be surprised. After all GWB was re-elected...

    Not legitimately.

But then, the same can be said about the current pResident.

With your current election system, he was. Popular vote doesn't count, remember?

    remember?

Bush won with 50.7% of the popular vote in 2004 (Kerry 48.3%). If the popular vote did count, Bush would have lost the 2000 election against Al Gore (47.9% vs. 48.4%). Bush won Florida by a couple of hundred votes, but the recount was stopped by the US supreme court (5 to 4 decission) before it was completed.

Trump had only 46.1% of the popular vote in 2016. We will see if he survives the hoax of the spreading coronavirus.
