    Hello All

I wonder what is the native charset in telegram.. most likely utf-8. Tg->fido seems to use CP866 all the time. No problems with english 7bit only. But pound sign is not 7bit. (?????????)..

Telegram uses utf-8. In Fido I use cp866. So tg_BBS use cp866 as default if no other defined in @CHRS from Fido.

But the direction from TG to Fido.. If UTF-8 is the native charset there, why not use it at least in non-russian echos?

The TG-Fido gate script could have performed some more sophisticated charset manipulation. For example, if the TG UTF-8 message only consists of Latin-1 characters then let it be such in @CHRS.

Basically, you can iconv original message and test it against a list of charsets in some meaningful order to check which one convers into without an error. Do not assume the whole world is using either Latin-1 or Cyrillic, there are at least a bunch of Western European languages in between.

How does the value of @CHRS correspond to the body of the message in this case? Perhaps I should set up the correct decoding in my GoldEd?

I think it is a wise decision to use UTP-8 only in those echo conferences where it is explicitly allowed. In other cases, I consider it necessary to use eight bit encodings for backward compatibility.

    Have nice nights.
