• dedicated fido app for this

From August Abolins@2:460/58 to All on Tue Jan 12 16:44:44 2021

The more and more I use the desktop (DT) Telegram app as part of the Telegram-Fidonet project, I see that all we need next is a dedicated version of the app that would simply turn the messaging window horizontal. That would help eliminate the seemingly restricted size of the current messaging window.

The areas list and group info sections could be accessible via hamburger menu that sits quietly in a corner or something.

The app could also feature addons for taglines and other features found in OLRs and for the echomail experience in general.

Traditional inter-message quoting could still be a challenge since the inherent way Telegram operates with replies is to bottom quote. But I notice that many people replying directly from their BBSes (Synchronet/Mystic systems) don't even bother cleaning up the original quoting anyway.

The main thing would be a horizontal orientation for this UI.

    Ooops..

"the inherent way Telegram operates with replies is to bottom quote. "

I meant to say "top quote", implying that the entire quoted part is at the top, and the new content is at the bottom.

There are custom Telegram apps out there. Perhaps ine does that already.

Maybe some of those custom bots could do that?

I agree the quoting system leaves something to be desired. Although I'm not sure what you mean about BBS Users not cleaning up their quoting. With
Mystic, at least, I have to select the lines that I'm quoting as I go.

Now with HotdogEd, quotes could get messy...

I haven't seen how the Telegram operates on a 16x9 smartphone screen (my Blackberry just has a 2"x2" square screen, and the app doesn't turn 90deg if I tried). But can anyone using it on a smartphone chime in and tell me if the app can re-orientate 90deg?

On my Blackberry, the areas list and group info sections are tucked away in their own corners and viewable one at a time.

On the desktop version, the presentation is in three columns with the areas list in the left column, the group info in the right-most column and the messaging window squeezed in the middle.

If we could only have the messaging window full width, or just a bit wider, then the sometimes full 79char width that some echos employ would look a lot better.

I forgot about the other "alternates" out there. Perhaps there
is one that has a re-orientate feature. Or.. like I said,
perhaps someone using their app can chime in and let us know if
    their version does that.

Ah yes! I forgot about the bots option. But I think they only
operate before and after the posts/editing, not during.

But maybe a bot can be triggered with custom in-line commands.

Eg. To add a random tagline use "--tt:r--" for a [r]andom one
from a user-defined or global database, or use the phone's
shortcuts to grab one from a file?

    There are probably several possibilities.

Every time I type "bb" on my Blackberry, the system expands it
to "Blackberry". I haven't found out *where* I can configure
that or add new ones. :(

I have seen more and more users avoiding the inner-quoting for
messages like this. A new/young generation coming into this
echomail world probably wouldn't care anyway. Some things simply
need to be abandoned - perhaps. With the msgid/replyid in play,
exhausting re-editing of messages for the sake of replies is
    technically not required anyway.

Now with HotdogEd, quotes could get messy...

    I've seen that. :(
