    EDITORIAL

    Spring Has Sprung

Over at 'Gazette HQ, it has been a beautiful day today at around 65F
(18C) and clear, sunny skies. This after having four inches of snow
on the ground last weekend. The weather can be very fickle around
    here this time of year.

    A few updates:

    - The 'Gazette and the 'Gazette Submission Guideliners are now
available via anonymous FTP at bbs.outpostbbs.net in
    /pub/network/fidonet/fgazette.

    - You can now submit FG articles via anonymous FTP; just drop off your
article in /incoming. Please let me know that you submitted an
article via netmail, email, or a message in FIDOGAZETTE.

    - I will be publishing the FidoGazette in FIDOGAZETTE both by a single
message and individual pages as individual messages. I will signify
the full single message in the message title with "[FULL]" in the
beginning of the subject so if your system cannot handle that message,
    you can safely skip it.

As always, I am looking for more articles for the FidoGazette. Your
    submissions are welcome!

Thank you for reading the FidoGazette. Your patronage is appreciated.

    COLUMNS
    =================================================================

As I See It: Slowing Down
    Sean Dennis (1:18/200)

My health has taken a turn for the worse these past few years and I am
now permanently disabled and unemployable due to health. I have had
the displeasure of fighting with Social Security for the past two
years and not having any income since January 2020. It's not been
easy nor fun but in the process of becoming disabled and changing my
worldview because of it, I have learned to slow down.

I now have seemingly unlimited time to do what I want if my health
isn't constantly interfering with me, making me either hurt constantly
or sleep for 14 hours. When I am feeling decent, I still enjoy
working on all of my BBS-related hobbies and, when I can get my radio
fixed, amateur radio even with being in an apartment.

However, the fight that was once in me is gone. I have to manage
stress carefully. I have a blood clot (DVT) in the artery in my right
leg that threatens to move if I get too upset or too physically
active. It could go to my lungs and suffocate me to death, to my
heart or brain blocking the blood flow to either organ and killing
me. Real fun to think about this, believe me.

So that's why I have backed off of a lot of things in Fidonet. I
simply can't handle it anymore. Now this doesn't mean that I am
leaving or anything (you can't get rid of me that easy) but it does
mean that if there's a problem I can't fix, I'll try to avoid the
    situation altogether.

Thankfully, things are somewhat calmer these days and I really enjoy
shooting the breeze in different echoes. It's nice to spend time
chatting. I enjoy publishing the FidoGazette even if I don't have a
lot of content to publish (yes, this means you: where is your article
for the FG? <G>). I guess it's the satisfaction of having a routine.

And there you have it as I see it.

Constructive criticism and comments are welcomed. Letters to the
editor are also welcomed. Netmail is welcomed also but I prefer the
other methods first (I accept crashmail via BinkD). Leave your
flamethrower and vulgarities at the door or I will just delete your
    message.

    FIDONET HISTORY
    =================================================================

The story of the very first Krautfunding
    Ward Dossche @ 2:292/854

Krautfunding these days seems to be very normal but it has escaped
many people how it all started and how influential Fidonet in it has
    been ...

It was in 2000 sometime when a German sysop by the name of Helmut
Hullen was excommunicated by his NC, re-listed by his RC24, again
excommunicated by the next RC24, before he was finally removed the
Z2C. In the process of this both RC24 and ZC2 were threatened with
    lawsuits if Helmut wasn't re-listed.

RC24 gave in but Z2C didn't crumble and Helmut Hullen took him to
court, in Belgium. Helmut Hullen hired the services of one of the
most famous criminal attorneys (Sven Mary), how he could afford that
for such a silly thing is a mistery to me. To make a long story
short, after a year and a half of proceedings and 4 sessions he lost
the case, had to pay his lawyer, had to pay a law firm in Germany and
had to pay the cost of the procedure.

My costs, as I was that ZC, were the fees of the lawyer. Pretty big
amount for a mere hobby of an insignificant network.

So here's this incredible sysop by the name of Udo Zaydowicz who left
the network in the meantime, coming up with the idea to start a
collection in R24 because the Z2C was not taken to court for some
private dispute. He was taken to court for a FidoNet matter based
upon Policy 4.07 and was representing FidoNet in court (not my
    words).

Michiel van der Vlist, who started a collection in R28, wrote in
ENET.SYSOP: "Well I guess all of FidoNet has won. So
    co[n]gratulations to us all."

The costs were slightly more than 1000 Euro and 30 nodes/points in
R24 plus the R28-contribution pledged more than 1500 Euro. Udo
managed the R24-portion by generally requesting about 2/3 of the
pledged amounts and upon delivery of the final invoice, that was
transferred to the Z2C. I don't remember anymore how the R28-portion
    was handled.

There is an aftermath to this story ...

Helmut Hullen remained out of the nodelist but some years later he
approached the Z2C to be relisted. After consulting with the then RC24
he was told that could happen but only if he refunded the money my
lawyer charged me ... To my surprise he did ... And a word is a word
... Helmut became back a node after spending some months in purgatory
(i.e. as a zone-independent node 2:2/530 under my immediate view) to
see if after 5 years of absence things would remain calm.
    FGAZ 18-06 Page 4 21 Mar 2022

They did and Helmut Hullen became listed as 2:2480/530 and later as
    2:2437/530.

He passed away Sept.19th 2016 and his obituary in Fidonews was
    written by ... me ...

The money which he refunded to me ... I contacted all donors and
asked them what they wanted me to do ... there were a lot of small
amounts that really didn't make sense in view of the international
money-transfer rates in 2005. So I asked if it would be OK to make a
donation to a worthy cause. Some wanted the money back and were
refunded, some not plus there were people that had left my line of
sight in the meantime ... for the last 2 cases whatever money was
left was donated to "Doctors Without Borders" and proof of the
donation was sent to the people concerned. Not a remark was received.

Hence ends the story of Helmut Hullen and the first Krautfunding in
    history.

    NET HUMOR
    =================================================================

    A Good Bad Pun
    From Sean Dennis (1:18/200)

In German prisoner-of-war camps, escapes were a a major problem, so
they would try to break the prisoners' spirits by making them do
mindless things. In particular, they would make the prisoners stand in
a line and all move their heads like a clock back and forth and say,
    "tick tock tick tock."

Some prisoners, unable to escape or otherwise change their situation,
chose a very subtle rebellion. They would do the head motions, but
instead of "tick tock tick tock", they would wait until the guards
were further down the line and switch to "tick tick tick."

None of the guards noticed this was going on for many months, until
finally, a young lieutenant was caught ticking by a senior SS Captain
    walking behind the line.

The captain stopped the exercise, walked over, looking face-to-face
with the young man, and said "A rebel. Vell, don't vorry, ve have
    vays of making you tock."

    Thought Of The Week

"There have always been ignorant people but they haven't always had
college degrees to make them unaware of their ignorance. Some people
imagine that they are well informed because they have memorized a
whole galaxy of trendy dogmas and fashionable attitudes."
