    Hi, All!

“We put up the sail, with the idea that if things really went south, we would have another boat to jump onto.” https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/buqvasp1rr/orcas-spain-portugal

Why does "go south" mean something wrong?

    Bye, All!

This is a long story, best explained I think, at https://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-xpm-2006-12-26-0612260438-story.htm

In brief, on most maps South is down so the correlation becomes "going down" = "going South" = "going bad". There are other possibilies .. let me know if you
    can't access the link.

    Cheers... Dallas

Why does "go south" mean something wrong?

My uneducated conjecture is that at one point the phrase
became a reference to the flight of criminals from South US
to Mexico, in search of shelter.
