Why does XP keep doing the "Found New Hardware" thing for every new
flashdrive I plug in? Even if it's an identical flash drive, it does
that. For example I bought two IDENTICAL SanDisk 32gb drives. XP had to
go thru this process for BOTH drives, not just the first one. WHY?

Each flash drive has a unique identifier. Even if they're the exact
    same

make and model. I assume you do not get the "Found New Hardware" with

subsequent insertions of the flash drives, just the first time...

    correct?

If you see that message every time then something else is wrong.

USB devices which have serial numbers, the
serial number alerts the OS to the fact that
an entry already exists for the device.

When a USB device doesn't have a serial number,
the OS will pop up that dialog each time, as
a form of punishment. Even moving the device
from Port 5 to Port 6 on your PC, could cause
the dialog to pop up again.

And while you would think having a serial number
for each device makes sense, the level of
    compliance with that requirement, wasn't
all that good in the past.

Based on capacity, a 32GB device should be modern
enough to have a serial number. And they should
    be distinguishable from one another.

Yep, I just got done sticking in a whole pile of old flash drives that
are all smaller ones, because some of them have data on them, and I
wanted to move all the data to one 32gb drive because I get tired of
finding drives with data everytime I need a blank one. So, each one of
them had to do the "found new hardware" thing.

However, after putting all the blank one away, I reinserted all the ones
with data and they did not do the "new hardware" thing again.

But I had two brand new 32 gb of the same brand (identical). I did not
expect the second one to do this. Now I know why it did though.

At least now I got a whole pile of 1gb 2gb 4 gb and 8gb drives and all
of them are blank.... Everything got moved to one 32gb drive. TOmorrow
I'll probably sort thru that and remove all the junk....
