The Moon’s Journey - Apogee to Perigee

    September 22, 2021

    Journey of the Moon

    Photographer: Soumyadeep Mukherjee

    Summary Author: Soumyadeep Mukherjee

The image above shows a compilation of all the full moons during its
most recent journey from apogee when it was furthest from Earth
(October 31, 2020) to its latest perigee or closest approach to
Earth (May 26, 2021). All eight full moons that appeared in this time
varied in size, with its angular diameter in the sky growing with
every full moon. For comparison, the supermoon at perigee on May
26, 2021 was almost 15% larger than the micromoon at apogee on
    October 31, 2020.

Each moon image is a stack of 225 images (best 75% of 300 images) taken
from the same location, with the same equipment, and at the same focal
length (600mm). The details of each moon- including the date of
capture, name of full moon, distance from earth and angular diameter-
are mentioned in the compilation image.

    Dusty Sunset Over Sicily

    October 22, 2021

    Summary Author: Teresa Molinaro

The photo above features a dramatic sunset on June 18, 2021 after a
very hot summer day. Although I was at 3,117 ft (950 m) above sea
level, immersed in the splendid Madonie Park, even here the heat
was heavy and annoying. I was hoping to find refreshment in the green
of nature and luckily around sunset the temperature began to be more
bearable. I waited for the sunset because I anticipated the suspended
Saharan dust would enhance the colors of the Sun, giving the
sunset an African flavor. At around 8:30pm local time the Sun was
preparing to go down behind the horizon, and it seemed that it was
plunging into the houses of Polizzi Generosa in the heart of the
Madonie. The spectacular colors of the sunset are due to the Saharan
dust disproportionately scattering shorter wavelengths of light,
thereby giving the sunset a reddish orange hue.

    Navajo Mountain and Lake Powell

    November 22, 2021

    Photographer: Thomas McGuire

    Summary Author: Thomas McGuire

Navajo Mountain, on the Utah-Arizona border, rises to an elevation
of 10,348 ft (3,154 m) and is the highest point on the Navajo
Nation. A laccolith mountain, it has a distinctive rounded shape
that can be seen from as much as 100 miles away (160 km); reminding you
that you are on or near Navajo lands. The Navajo Nation reservation
is a semi-autonomous territory larger than the state of West Virginia.
Although subject to the laws of the United States, the Navajo Nation
has its own internal regulations and law enforcement agencies.

This image was taken in 2007 on my 50-mile (80 km) canoe trip on
Lake Powell to Rainbow Bridge. There is no road access.
Transport by small boat is not a recommended way to get there due to
the wake of motor boats, notoriously strong winds, and sudden
storms that sweep up the 100 mile length (160 km) of Lake Powell. But
large tour boats visit Rainbow Bridge daily.

Due to the limited 2019-2020 snow pack in the Rocky Mountains and the
continuing drought in the Southwest, Lake Powell and Lake Mead
each dropped this past summer to below 30-35% of capacity; a
historic low. This low lake level is nationally significant because the
largest cities of the American Southwest depend on these Colorado River
    reservoirs for water.

    Scarlet Waxcap Mushrooms

    December 22, 2021

    Scarletwaxcap

    Photographer: David Wigglesworth

    Summary Author: David Wigglesworth

I was so pleased to find these examples of the Scarlet Waxcap
Mushroom (Hygrocybe coccinea). My wife and I were on a walk in our
favorite forest, and just off the main trail under some hardwood
trees was this small display composed of several different stages of
this bright little mushroom. The mushroom at the bottom of the photo is
displaying the bell-shaped, uniformly red/scarlet cap or pileus.
Conversely, the mushroom at middle-right is starting to flatten out and
is losing some of its scarlet colour at the margins of the cap. Lastly,
the mushroom at the top is in its mature form, displaying a broad,
flat, glabrous cap. Estimated diameter of the top mushroom cap was
    approximately 1.75 to 2.2 in (4.5 to 5.5 cm).
The scarlet waxcap is widely distributed throughout North America
(and indeed, the northern hemisphere, including Japan, China, and
Europe), but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen them before. I couldn’t miss
these ones, though. The smallest was so bright red, it clearly stood
    out against the mossy ground.
