Streamers of dust blew over the Arabian Sea on November 22, 2022, when
the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board
NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the region.
The western tan-colored plume is the broadest and rises from Iran while
the narrower stream of dust comes from Pakistan. Greenish tints in
water just off the coast are also likely caused by sediment, such as
sand and dust. Point sources for the dust isn’t obvious, but winds
often blow down from the Makran Coast Range in Western Pakistan and
Eastern Iran into the dry coastal valleys, and carry dust southward
over the Arabian Sea.
