Don't we all (at least Windows users) still use a component of
DOS called the command-line? I run batch programs everyday to
send backups via ftp/telnet. I only fetch ewwtoob videos using
youtube-dl, and I run a batch prog to "touch" those files with
the current date. I'll hop into CLI to check a few things
    every now and then.

The newer WinXX'es might give us a GUI, but isn't it just DOS
    under the mantel?

I don't actually use my Windows machine very much any more. I experiment a lot with tweaks and programs, to the point I've fried my computer's systems more than once. My wife tends to frown at that.

It's a pity, because I found a lot of things that I could get older machines to do and run, which conventions said couldn't.

I need to get back into that.

To answer above question, maybe ... I have not asked every person on earth.
_I_ do not use it for a looong time.

But I should take a closer look to DOSBox again when I have some time.
    (DOS emulator)

Don't we all (at least Windows users) still use a component of
    DOS called the command-line?

Many windows users do not use any command line.
Also I would not attribute the command line to DOS.
CP/M had a command line before DOS existed at all.
And UNIX had a command line before CP/M existed :)

The newer WinXX'es might give us a GUI, but isn't it just DOS
    under the mantel?

Not true for a very long time.
Windows NT never had any DOS except emulation.
Same is true for everz Windows after Windows ME.

Some programs, like OpenXP, have a "Drop to DOS", and that
takes me to a command shell. To be accurate, perhaps it should
    say "Drop to emulated-DOS"

Ahh... ok. I realize we are talking about the original DOS
now. Save for Win95 and Win3.1 the later DOS shells are emulations.

I always use DOS on BBS. I'm currently using the BlueWave 2.30/
    DOS + Boxer/DOS 7.0b text editor.

I love text screen programs. My laptops have DOS-only partitions,
but actually i use more emulators like vDosPlus or directly from the
command line on Windows 7 x86.

I love DOS as well. I just don't have a system to run it on. My PC at the house necessarily has to be Windows because of access my grandchildren need for school and the like when they visit.

I prefer text based programs too, for the most part. Linux became my "new DOS"
around 2001 because you could still boot into text mode and run command line/text based programs, with networking, sound and multitasking. I don't use
the plain text mode as much now, but it is still good to have and use from time
    to time.

I love the look of vDosPlus on my 16:9 monitor; the fonts look
proportionally correct and sharp. I'm doing more text editing using
my old DOS-era tools (Qedit and VDE) now with VDP.

Emulators or VMs not are the same thing but are fun. On laptops i

Windows. But i use emulators must of the time.

I'm tempted to get a thin client and put DOS on it - I have a 4:3 VGA
monitor that'd do nicely with it. Alas, no room. So, an emulator it
    is, for now.

If I could find a .wav file of an AT starting up and beeping, maybe
that'd help me stick to DOSBOX...

It's funny how much sound plays a part in my mostalgia - the boot,
those loud power supply fans, spinning MFM drives, one beep good, two
beeps bad out of a little tinny speaker inside the case. The Telix
connect sound. All of the sounds in DOOM...

The sounds and sights do play a part, perhaps the most important one. Commodore 64 emulation never looked right until Vice put in CRT emulation. The
tactile experience of using the keyboard, loading the disks, the way the monitors look, the fan and disks sounds is definately a large part of it. I have a few old DOS machines, and using the VGA CRT is an important part of the 'how it was' experience. I don't get people who connect an old machine to an LCD display.

For me, the joy of using the older machines is how they looked, felt and sounded, more than the specific software.

I'm sure you can find that WAV file of an older AT computer starting up. If I had a better microphone, I'd record one for you. But hey, I've got a 10 year old Phenom II machine, and IT still beeps once on start up, I installed a PC speaker in it after many years thinking I couldn't. I think most desktops will
still have PC speaker pins, even if the cases don't have the speaker.

Sure. The experience of use old hardware is unique. On late
90's i make a 286 with RLL hard drive and CGA monitor from junk
parts and loved the experience. Unfortunately on new home after
marriage don't had room for this things. Now only emulators or VMs.
