01 May 1886 - WORKERS STRIKE AND RALLY FOR RIGHTS IN MAJOR US CITIES: Sixty-hour workweeks at poverty wages inspire marchers to mass in
Chicago, New York, Milwaukee, and other American cities. Among their
demands are an 8-hour workday and better labor conditions. The strikes
and rallies will inspire International Worker's Day.

The Haymarket Affair is generally considered significant as the origin
of International Workers' Day held on May 1, and it was also the climax
of the social unrest among the working class in America known as the
Great Upheaval. According to labor historian William J. Adelman.

03 July 1886 - KARL BENZ PRESENTS HIS BENZ PATENT MOTORWAGEN: A
three-wheeled vehicle, the Benz Patent Motorwagen is the first
automobile built to be propelled by an internal combustion engine, and
its inventor Karl Benz presents it publicly for the first time in
Mannheim, Germany. Benz will go on to help co-found the Mercedes-Benz
    car company.

The Benz Patent-Motorwagen was a motor tricycle with a rear-mounted
engine. The vehicle contained many new inventions. It was constructed of
steel tubing with woodwork panels. The steel-spoked wheels and solid
rubber tires were Benz's own design. Steering was by way of a toothed
rack that pivoted the unsprung front wheel. Fully elliptic springs were
used at the back along with a beam axle and chain drive on both sides. A
simple belt system served as a single-speed transmission, varying torque between an open disc and drive disc.

    Title: Benz's Gefilte Fish
Categories: Seafood, Breads, Herbs, Vegetables, Chilies
    Yield: 6 servings

    20 oz Pkg Benz’s gefilte fish;
    - defrosted
    4 tb Matzo meal
    1 lg Egg
    3 tb Chopped parsley
    1/2 ts (heaping) ground cumin
    1/4 ts Ground turmeric
    3 cl Garlic; minced
    2 tb Olive oil
    1 lg Onion; thin sliced
1/2 Red bell pepper; thin sliced
    1/2 Yellow bell pepper; thin
    - sliced
    1 Carrot; peeled, thin sliced
6 cl Garlic; peeled; cut in half
    3 tb Tomato paste
    1/2 c Canned chickpeas; rinsed,
    - drained
    15 oz Can diced tomatoes
    15 oz Can tomato sauce
    1 tb Harissa; to taste
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
4 c Fish or vegetable stock
    Salt & pepper

In a bowl, mix the fish, matzo meal, parsley, cumin,
turmeric, garlic, and egg. Place in the frige while you
    prepare the sauce.

Heat oil in a 6-qt. saucepan over medium-high heat. Add
onion and cook until translucent. Add garlic, carrots
    and peppers and sauté until softened. Add tomato paste;
cook, stirring, until caramelized, about 3 minutes. Add
chickpeas, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, harissa, lemon,
stock, salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Form the
gefilte fish mixture into small balls and slowly add to
the sauce. Don’t overcrowd the sauce, if there isn’t a
lot of room, wait for the fish balls to set before
moving them around to make more space for additional
balls. Reduce heat and simmer until balls are cooked
through, about 45 minutes. Serve hot with additional
    parsley for garnish.

NOTE: You may add a pinch of sugar or a drizzle of honey
to the sauce if you wish.

VARIATION: Fish balls have more of a fluffy matza ball
texture. If you want something more dense, you may fry
up the gefilte fish into patties instead. Make the sauce
without the stock, adding only as needed and serve over
    the patties.

28 October 1886 - LADY LIBERTY LIFTS A LAMP OVER NEW YORK HARBOR:
'Liberty Enlightening the World,' 151-feet of copper neoclassical
sculpture, is accepted as a gift from France and dedicated by US President Grover Cleveland after hundreds of thousands of revelers throw the world's first ticker-tape parade in honor of the new lady of Liberty Island.

The statue is a figure of Libertas, the Roman Goddess of Liberty. She holds a torch above her head with her right hand, and in her left hand carries a tabula ansata inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776 in Roman numerals), the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. A broken chain and shackle lie at her feet as she walks forward, commemorating the national abolition of slavery following the American Civil War. After its dedication the statue became an icon of freedom and of the United States, being subsequently seen as a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea.

    1/4 c Sugar
    6 tb Butter

    2 1/4 ts Baking powder
    3/4 ts Salt
    1 1/2 c Milk
    3/4 c Sugar

    MMMMM----------------------BLUEBERRY SAUCE---------------------------
    2 pt Blueberries
    1/4 c Water
    1/4 c Sugar
    1 tb Lemon juice
    Whipped cream

Pour sugar over strawberries and mix well. Set aside and
    let macerate for 20 minutes.

    Set oven @ 350+|F/175+|C.

Put butter in a 9" X 13" ovenproof serving dish, and
place in the oven to melt.

Mix together flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl,
and stir in milk and sugar to make a batter.

Remove dish with melted butter from the oven, and pour
    in the batter.

Arrange drained strawberries over the batter in a single
layer, then drizzle the juices from the berries on top.

Return the dish to the oven. Bake until the batter is
browned and has risen up and around the fruit,
    approximately 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the blueberry sauce. Rinse and pick over
blueberries. Combine water and sugar in a saucepan, and
heat to the boiling point. Place 1 pint of blueberries
in the bowl of a food processor. Process, turning the
machine on and off about 4 times, until berries are
coarsely pureed. Add to sugar syrup with lemon juice,
and bring back to a boil. Cook about 2 minutes more. Add
remaining pint of whole berries, reserving a few for
    decoration.

Serve blueberry sauce over the warm cobbler, and top
with whipped cream and reserved berries.
