01 April 1698 - APRIL FOOLS FLOCK TO THE TOWER OF LONDON: Several
gullible people are sent to the Tower of London to see the "washing of
the lions" (a nonexistent practice), as will be reported April 2 by a
London newspaper. The prank will endure for centuries, making clear that
the tradition of tricking dupes on April 1 is becoming increasingly
popular.
While there are similar holidays in ancient Rome and Britain, the eldest
- and tidiest - historical reference comes in a Flemish poem from 1561
in which a nobleman sends his servant on "fool's errands" on April 1,
according to a history of the holiday written by Stephen Winick of the
Library of Congress' American Folklife Center.
Roughly the same era in France, people slow to adopt the change of
calendar from the last week of March to January 1 - due to the move from
the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, decreed in the Council of
Trent - were called "April fools," and were played tricks on, according
to History.com.
The Catholic Church also may have had a hand in bringing April Fools'
Day to the fore earlier in history. A carnival-like "Feast of Fools," originally held in medieval France and England on Jan. 1, was practiced
but was banned by the 15th century, folklorist Jack Santino told The
Washington Post. But the holiday continued for hundreds of years, said
Santino, who wrote the book "All Around the Year: Holidays and
Celebrations in American Life."

8 Whole strawberries; garnish
1 tb Instant Clearjel

1 1/3 c Whipping cream

4 tb Granulated sugar
3/4 c Bavarian cream

- can
Mix the Instant Clearjel and sugar together in a medium
bowl. Add the sliced strawberries and toss. Set aside.
Whip the cream until stiff peaks form adding the 4
tablespoons sugar and orange flavor. Fold the Bavarian
cream into the whipped cream.
Toss the berries again. Spoon the berries and the
whipped filling into parfait or other glasses in layers.
Top with whipped cream.
Serve within three hours.
NOTES: A strawberry slicer will allow you to slice the
strawberries thinly.
Instead of Bavarian cream, we have also made this with
the same amount of plain yogurt and it was very good. We
used plain yogurt with gelatin so that the gelatin would
add subsistence to the filling to extend the holding
time.
Instant Clearjel is a starch product that gels without
cooking. You can make this recipe with cornstarch but
you would need to cook a slurry with a little water, let
it cool, and then add the strawberries. Avoid cooking
the strawberries.
Whipped cream from a spray can allows for a neat
decorative presentation. You can also whip cream and
pipe it onto the desserts with a pastry bag.
