This is a tribute to my 6th grade History teacher, who was also the music director at my school. In teaching us music as the chorus, her motto was "You only have eyes for me." Woe betide the student who was not looking at her during chorus practice. She gave the offender a look that would reduce them to
rubble. Anyway, she had us so good, we were in demand all over New Orleas to perform.

Isabelle B. Murphy, a retired teacher who taught 53 years in the Orleans Parish
Public Schools and the Archdiocesan Schools. Miss Murphy was born and educated
in New Orleans where she graduated from the New Orleans Normal School. From Loyola University, she received the degrees of Philosophy and Master of Education. She taught at Bellville, Gayarre, McDonogh 18, McDonogh28 and St. Francis Xavier in Metairie, LA. Miss Murphy was a supervising teacher for Louisiana State University in New Orleans and was on the committee to introduce
Junior High Schools in New Orleans. While on the faculty of McDonogh 28, she was chairman of the Social Studies Department, faculty advisor for the student body, Red Cross, and School paper. She was the first to conduct a choir on TV for the New Orleans Parish Schools and the first to have a choir to sing for the New Orleans Symphony Youth Concerts. The Junior American Clubs in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes were reorganized by her. Miss Murphy was on the state and parish committee to write courses of study in Music and U.S. History. In Religious activities, Miss Murphy was a national consulter for the National Sodalities, president of the New Orleans Archdiocesan Federation of Sodalities,
the Metropolitan Union and University Deanery of Sodalities. She held office on many Committees of St. Rita Parish of New Orleans. Miss Murphy was a choir member of the Holy Name of Jesus, St. Rita, St. Matthias and Our Lady of the Rosary parishes. The Order of St. Louis Medallion from the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the National Christian Life Communities Development Award and the gold
Achievement Pin of the Archdiocesan Federation of Parish Sodalities were conferred on her. Her civic activities included sending 35,000 young ladies to dances for service men during World War II for USO-NCCS and working with Displaced Persons. She sang , played piano and organ for religious and organizational functions. For over 60 years, Miss Murphy played for the Mass and sang solos at the New Orleans Rehabilitation Home. Miss Murphy was the recipient of the Valley Forge Teachers Medal, the Peter Fell Trophy, the Thatcher Pin, the Blue Key Talent Plaque and a Veterans of Foreign Wars citation. The Gold Distinguished Service Pin from the National Christian Life Communities was awarded to her. She is listed in ?Personalities of the South?, ?World?s Who?s Who of Women?, International Register of Profiles and the ?Dictionary of International Biography.? Miss Murphy was the daughter of the late C. J. T. Murphy and Isabelle Fontan Murphy. She was the sister of the late
Dr. Daniel J. Murphy, Miss Jennie L. Murphy, Lotta E. Murphy, Camille M. Murphy and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Charles J. Murphy. She is survived by her niece, Mrs. Patricia Murphy Jungle of Fort Myers, FL., nine grandnieces and nephews and twenty-three great-grandnieces and nephews.
