A search for "fidonet" at archive.org turned up this little gem:

    Publication date
    1985-10-22

Guests: Ezra Shapiro, Byte Magazine; Rory O'Connor, InforWorld; Matthew McClure, The Well; Donald Ingrim, Alameda County DA; George Morrow, Morrow Computing

Products/Demos: CompuServe, Byte BBS, The Well. Copyright 1985 Stewart Cheifet Productions.

Ezra Shapiro was 1:125/371 among the earliest users of Fidonet software. But he seems to have only been nodelisted for 1 year.

Wasn't Tom Jennings and/or Tim Pozar on one of the episodes? I'm pretty sure they filmed in the SF bay area.

It was quite an episode. Yes it was bay area and the themesong sounds familiar.
I may have been able to watch it on my local affiliate during that era. It's interesting that the district attorney in that interview was already discussing
criminal uses of BBS's even in those early days. It blows me away. Anyway, I grew up in Sacramento and so it wasn't uncommon for local shows to play on our networks back in the day. It does appear to be a PBS show from the way it was sponsored.

I thought it was amazing that a lawyer contributed some "concerns" back then too.

But today, liability on the "provider" has been actually reduced based on a recent story I read somewhere. I will try to dig it up. Meanwhile, the judge opined that since no one actually reads the User Agreements (UAs) or that they are too long, or that they are hard to locate, dismisses the liability of the service provider *AND* the user! Maybe I am paraphrasing that poorly. I will see if I can find the original article/judgment.

Even into the late 90s, it was the provider's liability if users did illegal activity using their systems. Sysops were forced to monitor user activity on their bbs's. My sysop watched everything I did. Sort of creepy. Less than a year ago, congress was threatening facebook adn all the other providers with taking the legislation away. The speaker said they were taking advantage of the
law and it can be taken away. I thought it was funny as if she was sitting on top fo the government and was holding all the power. That threat fell flat. But
anyway, the late 90s gave the provider relief from this liability.

The law you are referring to was based on the argument that, "If we need to vet
everything everyone says on our systems, we can't run our systems and people lose a way to communicate." So the gov't basically extended a right already given to the phone company. If someone commits a crime via the phone, the phone company cannot be held responsible because they are neutral 3rd party - or in the case of this law, a "platform" for communication.

But then the big Leftie companies started suppressing non-Leftie communication.
Some people said "Hey! Wait a minute! You said that you couldn't do that and
run your systems. So, stop suppressing speech or we will revoke your protection."

The big Leftie companies said "OK", but really didn't change much. They just gave their speech suppression better sounding names. Like "keeping misinformation down" or "cracking down on Hate Speech".

Don't forget the buzzwords such as 'violent speech.' That's my favorite.

I'm really torn though. These companies have tons of power but are also public companies. They're under no obligation to follow the constitutional free speech
protections because they're not the government. Nor should they. On the other hand, their downfall will be the very act of censorship/discrimination that they practice.

I'll defend their choice just as I defend the wedding cake baker who refuses to
bake for gay weddings. While I think his religious justification was about as weak as the left's, it's his choice to limit the success of his business. So be
it if he hates gay people. That's small fries compared to the list of whole groups the left hate. It's his choice to deny business to whomever he see's fit. What I don't like is how the press picks and chooses who they define as having a right to operate their business. If you're on the right, you have no right. If you're on the left, different story.

It's disgusting that Alex Jones, a complete nutjob, has been silenced and de-platformed. I don't particularly like the guy and I don't listen to him, but
I also don't agree with silencing him. The left has descended completely into deeply fascist pattern from which Idoubt they'll ever recover.

This is why I feel the democratic party is dead. I call them the democrat party
now. In another thread, I said that their ethos is fragile. AOC is evidence of it. Her barside politics tore them to shreds and she didn't even try and she did in a year what people haven't done in a century.

Oh, ya. "Hate speech". Which we've found to really mean "speech we don't like"
or "speech that doesn't match our Narrative".

I completely agree. But these companies want the best of both worlds.

On one hand, they want to be a platform (like the phone network) and not be held responsible for what others post on their platform. I get that. I would argue that companies like Facebook and YouTube wouldn't be able to exist if they had to vet every post.

But on the other hand, they want the power to edit speech that they don't like.
But that makes them a publisher and they **are** responsible for their content
    on their platform.

They can't have it both ways. The rules don't work like that.

If Facebook or YouTube want to deplatform/censor certain people, I'll agree with that. But then they lose their Section 230 protection and can be sued for
    what other people post.

If they want that protection, that's fine too. But they lose their ability to silence people they don't like.

And remember, I'm not talking about Facebook or YouTube taking content down because a court told them to do so.

This is why I feel the democratic party is dead. I call them the
democrat party now. In another thread, I said that their ethos is
fragile. AOC is evidence of it. Her barside politics tore them to

    haven't done in a century.

I agree. The Democrat Party is gone. Left in its place is the Socialist Party
because the people there have much more in common with socialists.

" colors Specifies the colors to use. (See README.col.)"

I have several colour sets (file extension .col) pre-canned from my

The *only* hardwired file is the configuration file: .mmailrc (mmail.rc

By default, the other files are placed in the MultiMail home directory ($HOME/mmail or $MMAIL). Directories specified in the .mmailrc are

I feel the same way, and that's why I'm torn. Do you remember that dumb obama/press coverup with the attack on our embassy by blaming some
obscure youtube vid? I believe their hate speech narrative was started
at that point. Would you bet a dollar no one saw that video until they pointed fingers at it? I'd bet it had a dozen views before that.

Oh, ya. These people are **really** good at deflecting the blame for their errors. And with the media on their side, plus a complete lack of journalism today, they get away with it.

Please take this elsewhere immediately. POLITICS would be a good place.

Sorry dude. Multimail shows 'messages to you' that I respond to.
Didn't really notice which echo I was in until you sent me a
    message.

Multimail has a status bar at the bottom that shows what echo you
    are replying in.

Now that you point that out to me, if I squint really hard, I can see that
pink background with white text. It says 'classic co'

It's likely that you need to update your Real Name on the BBS to
include a last name. Probably something that the Sysop can do for
    you.

I'll just sign my posts with my name until I stand up my own board which
    is in progress.

Multimail also has no real setting that specifically allows me to
change the 'from' field. I paged my sysop. I have no other
control on what goes into my message header that I can see. He'll
    help me I'm sure.

along with the operator(s) making sure that fidonet echos are all
marked to use "real names", too...

this is one of the problems seen when operators simply import lists of message areas with no care or thought about an area's requirements...

I have a 100 and a 200. Just got my CCR-82 today off ebay. Needs new belts.

About to pull it apart so I can retrobrite the case and do a once over of
all the PCB's for rust and do a cleanup. She should look like new once I'm
    done with it.

I don't watch the press since my Service. Not only would we give them misleading and false information, they'd spin it even further. By
the time we saw the coverage of our press releases (usually within the hour), there was nothing truthful.

There should be a file called COLORS in your \MMAIL directory (or the

there might even be some sample color pallets included, too... i remember numerous ones included several that could be easily swapped in... a lot of them provided what is/was called the frontdoor theme/pallet because the colors were like frontdoor... there are/were others, too... i just don't recall them, ATM...

    [time passes]

a quick google turns up this page with numerous color scheme/theme files that one can use...

Yeah I'll get around to it. I'm getting used to the pink with white text. I'll fix it at some point.

Yes, that's entirely on the BBS you're calling from about changing the name, however, there is a way to do it with Multimail but it's a hassle: after creating all of your replies, go back in to the REPLY area and you can edit each message there allowing you to change your name.

As long as you sign your messages with your full name, I'm cool with it.

You can change that in the COLORS file in your mm directory. That is hard
to see now that you mention it.
