    Hi John...

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but I was wondering whether anyone knows whether Fido is still up and running in Russia/Ukraine?

Stas' system doesn't seem to be affected. I doubt that other R50 or R5000 system would be either. But the one listing in Kiev may certainly be facing technical difficulties to say the least. :( Maybe the sysops in ENET.SYSOP have a better sense of what is happening. The are node 6078, 5001, 6035 systems represented there.

Thanks August. I was thinking that the situation there is the perfect test for the robustness of the system.

Good questions. I know there are some Russians who participate in the
English Tutor echo. I have not noticed any traffic from them in a few
days, but that may not mean anything.

I spotted some traffic in enet.sysops.

At least one that I remember from english-tutor is also in enet.sysop.

I don't know about Russia, but there is enough evidence it's running as smoothly as ever.

I have been monitoring the connectivity of binkp systems in R46 (Urkaine) since the previous sunday (27-Febr.). There isn't much change. There's one system no longer connectable, and 1 that has become connectable since. All others are more or less unchanged.

But the situation on the 27th was already bad. A large part of the systems was not connectable at that time. Whether that was due to the war or because of the general state of fidonet from even before the war started, I don't know, but I suspect the latter.
And there is still a large number of POTS only nodes in R46, that I can't test, even I wanted to.

    Bye, Wilfred.

Thank you, that's truly helpful and good news.
There are a lot of people who are going to need communication in the area for the next while that might not be able to use the standard channels.

    One option I've been investigating/testing is https://briarproject.org/how-it-works/

This is how I was envisaging Fido working when I posted to Future4fido (and got so heavily castigated for heresy).

    All the best

Binkp still needs the internet. If that's down...

Got that installed too. August convinced me to test it. ;)

I don't remember that, so it must not have been that bad.

One of my points supports binkp connections over tor, but I haven't looked into it myself. Maybe I should...

    Bye, Wilfred.

    Bye, Wilfred.

What I've been thinking about is that having a local node working would be useful. Without that, having a mobile node, one running on a laptop, for someone who is going into and out of the area, would allow people to connect via local wifi hotspot, exchange packets and then when the laptop is back in an area with connectivity, it could connect and deliver the packets.

Having aftershock as a client would make that trivial to configure and run.

    All the best

Sounds like a bit more modern version of the floppy network. ;-)

But if I understand you correctly, you don't need any new tech for that. You can do that with existing software...

    Hello John!

    One option I've been investigating/testing is https://briarproject.org/how-it-works/

Have you lassoed any more contacts to try the altenative wifi/
bluetooth connections to see how the messages propagate?

I'm just wondering.. would a message that is posted to the
Forum ever reach a Contact that I might never synch with, but
another user who is online with wifi/BT with that person
    *would* get the message?

This is how I was envisaging Fido working when I posted to Future4fido (and got so heavily castigated for heresy).

The initial responses were probably inspired by apathy more
    than by anything else.

Yes. I've gotten, A to b via Bluetooth, b to c via WiFi with no internet, c to d via internet and d to e via Bluetooth.
    it works...
