• Virtual Modem for a DOS BBS

From Michael Batts@1:227/114 to All on Sun Jun 21 09:39:14 2020
Im working to get my old DOS/Modem BBS platform (Spitfire) back online for posterity. Ive tried NetSerial with no success. Im able to get a connect
but then NetSerial locks up and the service shuts down. I searched and found two virtual modem apps, one is Virtual Modem 2.2.2 produced by fabulatech. This program works wonderfully but is only sold in a pairs at $139 each ($280 to get the board back up). The other, Virtual Modem Pro, like NetSerial does not work.

Id like to get NetSerial working as its the only free option and looks like a much better app than the others. Any thoughts or suggestions for a fix for Netserial or another free (or at least cheaper) app would be greatly appreciated. Please note that Spitfire is not fossil aware so I dont think I will be able to get it running under Mystic or Netfoss and net3bbs.

    Thanks in advance!

There are a few sysops around still running DOS BBSes, Nick Andre, thwe guy
who Authors D'Bridge, runs one. You should go to his website and or fido
echo to see how he does it...

Why not run Mystic or Synchronet.... they are being developed and are free...

    :)

    Good luck...

Thanks for the reply Joe. After a NetSerial update I now have three Spitfire nodes successfully running under NetSerial. Additionally, I have had three nodes running Mystic for over a year. My goal with Spitfire was to get my original BBS running again. It was a challenge and we still have a few in
the pipe but its looking good so far. Not bad for a pre-Y2k system!

    Hello Michael,

Sorry for the delayed response, but I havent been a Fidonet member in
years. I just saw your complaint about NetSerial crashing, and
foruntatly another sysop encountered the same issue and he actually
contacted me directly and let me know about it. I released a beta patch
and it confirmed the issue is resolived. I'm planning to release a full
version at the end of the month but you are welcome to download the beta
in the mean time. I just shot you an email with the download info.

Don't hesitate to contact me directly. I did get your inquiry regarding
the NetSerial sysop deal for $25 last month and hopefully you got my
reply as well. You can also text or call me at eight oh five 444-2660.

    Regards, Mike
