    Hey Nancy!

Yeah, we ended up with over 18"

Which is exactly 18" more than we got. Other than the little we got a couple weeks ago there has been zero snow this season. We did get some last year in Febuary but it doesn't look like it'll happen this year. :::knock on wood:::

we had total cloud cover that night

It was almost perfect here. A bit on the humid side which impacted the clarity a tad, but considering the normal cloudy/rainy for the time of year this was as amazing as we could ever expect.

    Life is good,

We continue to have dribs and drabs of snow..... and got hit bad with the
polar vortex, but not nearly so bad as the northern midwest did.... Now
they're talking rain and warmer than usual.... I'd just as soon have
    stayed between the two....

Indeed amazing, and I do envy you that.... :) We did get to see last
year's blue moon eclipse, though... IIRC, we had some light cloud cover
but were able to see at least some of the eclipse as the clouds parted
    at the right time....

We got a dusting overnight. More predicted too. On the plus side it doesn't look heavy enough to cause any damage. :::knock on wood:::

and got hit bad with the polar vortex

It's been at the top of the news here. We're supposed to get a small taste of it over the next couple of days except here it is called "arctic outflow" via mountain passes on the mainland. Tonight is predicted to drop to -6C-ish which is nowhere near as cold as what they are seeing out east. Overnight should be the worst of it with this latest bout with winter.

We're past the worst again.... And here in the east it wasn't nearly as
bad as things got in mid-continent.... Yesterday, we broke the record
for high temp... the record was 58øF, and we went over 60øF... back into
the 40s today, and continuing to drop back into seasonal temps for later
    this week....

    We're past the worst again....

Mother Nature is still giving us the cold shoulder. I like the sounds of you current temps as 40F is more or less the normal for this time of year in this neck of the woods.

No snow since Monday but given the sub zero temps (<-in C of course) there is a chance of getting more dustings later this week. Personally I would prefer the higher average temps and the usual rain.

Monday was well over 62øF... and then Wednesday, the temps were just
below freezing and that nasty freezing rain came.... we still had a bit
of that today.... I had to defrost my car before going out to my dentist appointment.... Supposed to be in the 20s F for the next few days, I
    think....

I much prefer snow (especially when only in dustings and small amounts)
to freezing rain.... Regular rain is just a bit too weird for this area
this time of year.... although I heard something about high winds, rain
and possible thunder overnight tonight.... ;0

    Hey Nancy!

    I much prefer snow

Not me unless of course we're talking about freezing rain which I wasn't. Wet and above freezing cold is normal for this time of year. What we're experiencing now is not the norm for Febuary although snow in Febuary isn't unheard of ... it's just not normal. The gale force winds predicted for just south of us is what has me nervous, especially if the snow is heavy and wet. :::shudder:::

although I heard something about high winds, rain and possible
    thunder overnight tonight.

Minus the thunder, it sounds like our forecast for overnight until Saturday. Also replace rain with snow although here at sea level it could fall as rain. The high winds have got me spooked.

    Hola Nancy!

So at least you get bragging rights...

I'll reserve them until Saturday after storm three is supposedly over before cashing in any bragging rights. At this point in time it looks like we've already broken all snow records. Methinks this next storm is probably overkill.

still having power is a very good thing

Yes it is, especially since it is impossible to get out and being snowed in alone without distractions would be a very bad thing. As we speak it is dark outside as well as cold and I'd much rather it stay out.
