    Hello All!

    Anyone using Mythtv with Mageia v8 etc ?

    I have been using it with ubuntu for many years but with the latest LTS of 22.04.1 it will not see video (Intel 200 on mobo) as a HDMI connector only
    a digital link which the system does not use.

    I would like to move it over to Mga but the only issue is - will it work ? Although the another is that there is no long time support facility with
    MGA and I just hate the problems related to upgrading to the next version every year or so (and it get worse for every year I age - brain not working
    so well now that I am over 75).

    One extra question is any one also running mcp (mythbuntu-control-panel
    with mga and if so what did you change ?

    Vincent

    Been using MYTHTV for years on Mageia. Running mythbackend on my server. Usually watching it my Plasma TV via hdmi connection. I also have it setup
    for mythfrongend connections from any of my LAN nodes.

    Your fist problem will be seen here. https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28289

    It is easy enough to use a myth database utility to save all your database settings and re-load them on a clean install.

    I run several SiliconDust network Over-The-Air tuners and pay Schedules Direct ~$25 a year for about 15 days of tv schedules.

    Although the another is that there is no long time support facility with
    MGA and I just hate the problems related to upgrading to the next version every year or so (and it get worse for every year I age - brain not working so well now that I am over 75).

    I hear that. 74 myself.

    I always do clean installs, so I resorted to writing install/change scripts
    to make the numerous changes. I figured it was easier to learn how to
    make the computer work for me instead of the computer working me.

    Never heard of the app or what it does.

    I use mythtv-setup for database entry of tuners, storage locations, channel selection, and whatnot.

    Wrote a script to get channels from my tuner, and write sql code to
    set desired channels visible or not and change underscore to period in
    the display.

    Never heard of the app or what it does.

    mcp was the tool used with mythbuntu and when it was discontinued it was supported in it's own right - By running it - sets up the extra sources for mythtv etc for ubuntu to do auto s/w updates whe it does the system.
    Also sets up various params and allow you to call myth configuration for
    the first time as well as the backend and frontend.

    Would need change in the sources to support Redhat types in place of apt
    (and .deb) to use rpt etc.

    Now that is use full it does get annoying to go through the entire new list
    of channels marking out the visible's for the rubbish and porn stuff and setting all BBC channels as non-advertising etc. [ Yes only the BBC is non advertising ]

    Thanks for your thoughts, I will look at installing MGA v8 as a secondary partition having backed up the current system even if the hardware sound selection is crap as should not effect new install - he says.

    Are you using v9 (cooker) for this or v8 ?

    If v9, is it stable enough ?

    Thanks,

    Vincent

    Ok, mythtv-setup and frontend ask for day one questions for DB access
    id/pw. mythtv-setup asks/set where schedule is pulled from.

    My pull_install script shuts down/starts backend and mysqld if rpms are to be updated. Hindsight is wonderful since a mysql update clobbered a running install.

    Would need change in the sources to support Redhat types in place of apt
    (and .deb) to use rpt etc.

    No idea about non-advertising. I just have to view the channel for awhile
    to decide if it is worth making it visible in the schedule.

    Sql script is pretty straight forward even if you have to manage it by hand. Snippet
    follows:

    $ head -17 channel_mtv.sql
    use mythconverg ;
    UPDATE channel
    SET visible=0, useonairguide=0 ;

    UPDATE channel
    SET channum="4.1", visible=1
    WHERE channum="4_1"
    OR channum="4.1"
    OR channum="4-1" ;

    UPDATE channel
    SET channum="5.4", visible=1
    WHERE channum="5_4"
    OR channum="5.4"
    OR channum="5-4" ;

    Used phpadmin to go spelunking around in the database to find tables and columns/fields and values.

    Thanks for your thoughts, I will look at installing MGA v8 as a secondary partition having backed up the current system even if the hardware sound selection is crap as should not effect new install - he says.

    Yep, I use three 40 gig partitions and just cycle through them on each release. That gives me partitions for next, current, previous installs, plus Cauldron.
    I also have a hotbu partition for backing up the current "Production" install.

    myth storage is on a separate partition. Install script adds links to storage directories.

    That looks like a good idea is there any chance of getting your scripts
    that supports mythtv and build, updates etc ?

    I notice that the packages in MGA uses mythtv v31 and I am currently
    running v33 under ubuntu along with MySQL.

    However, I am worried about using mariadb as I have had a number of issues
    with it as it differs a lot in the mysql tables compared to MySQL as well
    as requirements regarding passwords etc.

    I did try and uninstall mariadb and install MySQL instead but found that
    there are many other packages that insist on mariadb.

    In many of these cases I cannot see any reason for it as there is no reason
    for them to use it and looking at databases installed and running I can
    only see the one that I set up for my own developed application which is a
    full accounting system.

    This I find very annoying to put it mildly as every distro build that uses
    myth does use MySQL s0 have to assume that there is a good reason and I
    cannot find one good reason for not using MySQL over mariadb and yes that includes personal use as against commercial usage as both have the same
    rules, i.e., personal is free to use but commercial is subject to a license
    fee of one type or another depending on the level of support one wants from
    the vendor.

    Do you know of a way to swap out mariadb for MySQL that will not break
    these other packages other than removing them ?

    I am going to 'asssume' that the mga install will allow me to repartition
    the M.2 SSD into say 60Gb partitions so I can create three extras with one
    for v8 and a reserve for v9 as and when it comes out but with a copy of v8
    and one spare for testing maybe with a pre copy of v8.

    Here I have two HDD's as sda and b with sda as storage of mythtv recordings
    and videos (and all the other required directories.
    sdb for me and setting up etc, such as my TV tuner and the required v4l
    driver / kernel modules, although this includes all of the v4l
    contributions and this comes from the TBS website.

    I do have to install all the kernel headers at the same time as the kernel
    and on the basis that updates to the kernel adds in the new headers etc.

    This way I just recompile the v4l modules with a make yesallconfig (or
    allyesconfig) to rebuild it for all installed kernels. Then run a sudo
    make install to insert them into /usr/lib/modules/[kernel-version]-generic/updates/extra

    Well that's the I have done it since ubuntu 14.04 without issues but with
    the latest 22.04.1 the sound configuration does not find any options for
    HDMI and I am fairly sure this happens after I install the v4l stuff as I
    am reasonably positive that before I installed them I did have HDMI
    options.

    I will keep fully clear of v9 for the moment as I tend not to do a system update until it has been out for 3 - 6 months to minimise the bugs.

    Habit of many, many years go back to mainframe updates where all had to be fully tested before and I am now way past that sell by date :(

    I have downloaded mga v8 so just have to find a working solution to
    creating a USB stick for it to use for install.
    Seams to be a restricted list of what will work but have grabbed ISOdumper
    to try ?

    I will send a email to you using my primary address if you can provide the scripts etc as gmail is a bit restrictive in attachment sizes.

    It is possible, but scripts are not standalone, but depend on a lot of
    common includes files/scripts and whatnot.

    Also scripts are not very elegant and a bit of a kludge that I am a bit embarrass for anyone to see them.

    I suggest you would be better off designing your own setup then do the
    coding yourself. I did not do the basic design phase, but just jumped into coding which results in a hodgepodge of code.

    I think I would be more helpful with suggestions and some coding
    examples rather than trying to get you up and running with my kludges.

    It does not take long to have a big mess.

    However, I am worried about using mariadb as I have had a number of issues with it as it differs a lot in the mysql tables compared to MySQL as well
    as requirements regarding passwords etc.

    Password fix is easily done in /usr/share/mythtv/initialdb/mc.sql
    here are the two lines to change.

    CREATE OR REPLACE USER "mythtv"@"localhost" IDENTIFIED by "new_pw_here";
    ALTER USER "mythtv"@"localhost" IDENTIFIED BY "new_pw_here";

    and modify all /.mythtv/config.xml files with new_pw

    Do you know of a way to swap out mariadb for MySQL that will not break
    these other packages other than removing them ?

    Nope, I find it easier to not fight change. Just adapt and stress level
    goes way down.

    I am going to 'asssume' that the mga install will allow me to repartition
    the M.2 SSD into say 60Gb

    60Gb seems a waste of space to me. I load all Mageia package groups and
    a bunch of add ons and games.
    $ grep urpm install_addons | wc -l
    154
    $ grep urpm install_toys | wc -l
    65

    $ lsblk -o NAME,TYPE,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINT,SIZE,FSAVAIL,FSUSED,LABEL,PARTLABEL /dev/sda3
    NAME TYPE FSTYPE MOUNTPOINT SIZE FSAVAIL FSUSED LABEL PARTLABEL
    sda3 part ext4 / 40G 19.1G 18G cauldron cauldron

    Do not forget to run tune2fs to change amount of reserve storage.
    I usually set os partitions at 1 percent. I also have a daily cron job
    to warn me when a partition hits 90%+ full.

    partitions so I can create three extras with one
    for v8 and a reserve for v9 as and when it comes out but with a copy of v8 and one spare for testing maybe with a pre copy of v8.

    I find the Mga partition manager a bit of a hassle. I keep a copy of
    the system rescue cd iso so I can boot it and run gparted to pre create/format/label all need/wanted partitions. Yes I know I can install gparted and use it, but that is not useful if I lose the install partition/disc.

    https://www.system-rescue.org/

    my change_fstab script changes all entries into LABEL=whatever and
    my grub scripts creates menu entries with LABEL names for easy identification.

    I will keep fully clear of v9 for the moment as I tend not to do a system update until it has been out for 3 - 6 months to minimise the bugs.

    Habit of many, many years go back to mainframe updates where all had to be fully tested before and I am now way past that sell by date :(

    I understand your view point, but the Mageia crew has done an outstanding job so far and I have had no problems going with the Official release as soon as
    it is released. Mainly because I usually start running Alpha to find any changes needed for my install/change scripts.

    I will send a email to you using my primary address if you can provide the scripts etc as gmail is a bit restrictive in attachment sizes.

    You will need to get/use my Mageia email address. If you were to do a
    ping -4c1 mouse-potato.com
    and checked the ip address you might notice it is not a good email address
    to contact me.

    Hello !

    Are you running mythtv v31 from the distro or have you downloaded and
    compiled v32 or 33.1 ?

    If you have built a later version did you have any issues with getting the correct dependencies (packages) from the repos ?

    Before my broken update of ubuntu caused by myth having a failed driver on reboot having upgraded 20.04 to 22.04.1 then upgrading myth from v31 to 33
    I reinstalled from scratch 22.04 only to find a big issue with getting
    sound as there was no driver options with HDMI.

    This means that I do have a back up of the v31 DB and a copy for v33 but
    with no data of v31.

    All this means that my old recordings (not videos as they are all good)
    can only be seen as files starting with the date references and no title.

    Do you know of a way that I can -
    recreate these to say title and where applicable for series of same title
    say SnnEnn etc OR

    On new recordings to save as similar instead of the cryptic file names.

    I have not found any setting that allows this but as you are an expert with scripts etc you might know a way - OK living in hope as there are 600
    episodes since 2018 that may well not have been watched but that said just
    how many hours do I watch the TV per night ? :)

    Regards,

    Vincent
