• [OT] Upgrade of Thunderbird.

From Doug Laidlaw@2:250/1 to All on Mon Oct 7 09:08:19 2019
Thunderbird has just notified that for some users (born losers like me)
the old profile will no longer work in TB 68, and we must create a new
one from scratch. I created a new profile just sufficient to post to
    this newsgroup.

Hmm! For several updates, the SeaMonkey Suite (think Firefox,
Thunderbird, plus) developers have recommended new profiles for each
update, because the 'new' SM program modifies the profiles in such a
manner that if you had to go back a SM version, the 'updated' profile
would be unusable by the older SM version!!

Maybe this has now spread to TB!

For those users, the fix is to look around in the old ~/.thunderbird/*.default and
copy just the files needed to the new ~/.thunderbird/*.default whatever.

I was able to do that for my address file (abook.mab) and several
    local folders.

All found using grep -r some_known_string_here ~/.thunderbird/* or
    using locate for folder name.

    According to https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/69.0beta/releasenotes/
this is a "known issue" in Thunderbird that was as yet unresolved. Your
old profile is still there, and usable, but an upstream bug prevents it.

I ran into the problem with one install test of T-bird 68 myself, and
that was with the 68.1.0 version, BEFORE I even started to test 68.1.1.

With version 69, they say a workaround is to start T-bird from the
command line using the "-p" option. This allows you to select the
profile you want to use. I believe this would also work with T-bird 68.
I had found another solution before I saw this, renaming the
..thunderbird that had been altered by running the update to ..thunderbird.old, and re-creating the original .thunderbird from a
backup. However, this was an install that I hadn't used much, and I have
no idea if what I did would have worked with an install I use more
    frequently.

I have missed out on that little drama
I had an update this morning and now have Thunderbird version 68.1.1

I also tried a successful test post

On a bonafide test site, Bits :-)

Yup, and today's Thunderbird new point release, thunderbird-68.1.1.tar.bz2, wanted a compete new default.

My current solution is to launch thunderbird with
    --profile $HOME/.thunderbird/*.default-release-1

Today's Firefox, firefox-69.0.3.tar.bz2, also wanted a clean default install. Just checked and firefox has the same -profile option.

Fascinating. Mageia has had thunderbird 68.1.1 for several days. I'm
    using it now. Checking...

Ah. Now it makes more sense. You made a typo, Bit. Today's release was
    68.1.2.

Was not a typo. Just a cut/paste. My bad, should have pasted thunderbird-68.1.2.tar.bz2
