• Thunderbird 68.0r: Email Composer using tiny font

From Maurice@2:250/1 to All on Sun Sep 15 18:56:48 2019
Since upgrading to V68.0 I'm finding that when comosinmg an email the
    text
is shown with almost unreadable tiny font.

Although I found that 'Ctrl + =' would increase the font size the effect
    does
not persist for the next email compose.

Anyone know how to set the Compose font style, please?

Edit/Preferences/Compose lets you chose font style and relative size.

After you make the changes shut down Thunderbird and start it again.

Only for HTML, though. (That is set to Trebuchet 'Large')
    (Tried Lucida font: Same)

I had the same problem and found no way to set the size for plain text
    in Thunderbird 68.
What helped me fix this was an add on called Auto Zoomer.
This keeps zoom level set with [ctrl +] which would normaly get lost at thunderbird restart.

Yes, but not the Composer text font, only when reading existing emails.

Have now installed that - and it worked after I had changed the default setting of 3 to 5 in about:config's "extensions.autozoom.composerzoom".

Yes, but not the Composer text font, only when reading existing emails.

    Regards,

On V60, select to write a new email, Then, in that window, select edit> preferences> composition and select the font size you want. It stays that size. V68 should be about the same.

Are you shure there is a way to set the font size for _plain text_ in tb60?
I had a look at my old windows box which still runs tb38 and all there
is (like in tb68) is a setting for font type and size for _HTML fonts_
    not for plain text.

Only setting for plain text I find in Edit/Preferences/View is for
quoted plain text in either version of the program and none in Edit/Preferences/Compose.

Filing a bug report does not seem appropriate here. Maybe a feature request?

Ask Mozilla(?) how to set the font first and then if their answer is not functional, report the bug.
But have you added ThunderHTMLedit 2.1.2 by Jorg K to your installation?

I haven't found the font size setting for plain text composition, but
I suspect it's one of the values that can be changed by dconf-editor or
    by gsettings.

I've tried various settings that look promising, but no luck finding the
path or schema and which key to edit so far.

Thunderbird expect everyone to use html messages, which is not appropriate
for most newsgroups, and which I avoid as much as possible for email and mailing lists. While it allows selecting plain text as the default, the
    font options are well hidden.

I would expect the response would be:

    (1) Install Auto Zoomer.

    (2) Change the default setting of 3 to e.g 5 in about:config's
    "extensions.autozoom.composerzoom".

That works for me. By using 'Ctrl+ =' to select preferred size,
    AutoZoomer
will ensure it stays that way in Composer.

Interesting. My fully-updated M7 (equivalent to 7.1) production install
that uses Thunderbird is using the 68.1.1 provided by Mageia, and I am
having no problems. But then, this install hasn't been re-installed
since sometime in January. It's been stable enough that only updates
    have been needed.

Maurice's problem was probably caused by Thunderbird's use of GTK+3
fonts, and the theme his Plasma install is using. He can change it in
System Settings/Application Style/GNOME/GTK ApplicationStyle, but those changes will be universal, affecting all GTK+ 3 applications, including Firefox and MCC. I didn't bring it up because I didn't think he wanted
    to change anything but Thunderbird.

Current Mageia 7 efforts are concentrating on repairing problems that
have cropped up preventing some upgrades from Mageia 6 to Mageia 7.
These must be fixed before the Mageia 6 EOL, originally scheduled for
the beginning of October, can be made Official.

Are you sure. Guessing not a Cauldron problem.

Both Thunderbird and Firefox have the profile problem even on version
bump of same base release. On my Mga7, I have
    $ thunderbird --version
    Thunderbird 68.1.1
    $ firefox --version
    Mozilla Firefox 69.0.2

and I was forced onto new profiles where I had to re-enter all changes
when the new versions came out. Finished debugging my last firefox
user.js change and from this point I'll modify my install_firefox
script to just delete user firefox directory, create new defaults dir,
and insert my user.js link to re-install my changes.

Next project is to automate thunderbird install to do the same.

It takes a bit of Trial and Error,
but Edit/Preferences/Composition to set the font and
the relative size. I have mine set to Tahoma and Large.
Tb should really let you set a defined type size but it
is what it is. Thunderbird version 68.1.1.

I don't bother with the Schilly tools anymore, because I no longer do
anything with optical media, except for testing potential Mageia isos.
My main production desktop doesn't even have an optical drive installed,
and I pulled the optical drive out of my main laptop to install an ssd.
I did put that drive into a usb enclosure, but have only used it once in
    about six months.

I discovered years ago that while commercially-produced optical media
holds up over time, the media I burned here does not, Schilly tools or
no. Flash drives and/or external hard drives have proven to be much
faster and more reliable for me.

    YMMV, of course.

Interesting. My fully-updated M7 (equivalent to 7.1) production install

since sometime in January. It's been stable enough that only updates
    have been needed.

Oops. I lied, though I didn't mean to. I plead a senior moment...

While it's true that I have been using M7 as my production install, it
has not been running without a re-install since January. I did a major hardware upgrade to my desktop in March, going from a Core 2 Duo
motherboard to one with a Sandy Bridge i5. At the same time, I added an
    ssd as my boot drive.

All this made a fresh install of M7 necessary, if it were to work
properly. I used whichever M7 iso that was the latest at the time. There
has been no need to make yet another re-install since then. Mageia 7 has
    been rock-solid stable for me.
