• Unexplained permission/ownership changes

From Grimble@2:250/1 to All on Sun Aug 29 11:25:23 2021
Can someone suggest a hidden process by which ownership of
/var/lib/boinc is changed from graeme:boinc to boinc:boinc and
    permissions changed from drwxrwxr-x to drwxr-xr-x during start-up? I
have to change it back after re-booting for boinc to work, and it
happens on two machines. Something to do with msec?

msec would indeed be the primary suspect. Back when I was still
running Mandrake and then later Mageia, it also did weird things behind
my back. PCLinuxOS -- which I ran after Mageia for a while -- has it
too, but there it is not enabled by default, and I left it disabled.

Since you are running Mageia, it runs msec every day. msec has one part
which checks file permission, and if set up to do so, it will change the permissions to what they should be, according the Mageia packagers. /etc/security/msec/perm.* (using the security level you assigned to the installation).
Or there could be something in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Thanks, all. I believe I've made the necessary changes to msec.
