I see that upgrading from Mga 7 is supported, but not if I have 32-bit libraries installed. I do have such libraries, and I need them, so a complete reinstall is the only way to go.
BTW: I already have a Mga 8 installation because Cauldron was
installed under that name. Running urpmi there said that everything was up-to-date. What happens to it now?

For the restore, just reverse the directory order.
Note the x option,
-x, --one-file-system don't cross filesystem boundaries
so this can be used for / as well and won't include things like the contents of
/proc/ or /dev/ that are not actually on disk.
If using different mount points for different directories, such as /var, ensure
that is backed up too.
This is backing up the contents of the filesystems, not the info about the file
systems such as the uuid. The info needed to recreate the filesystems must be recorded separately. I keep copies of the output of ...
# sfdisk -luS
# blkid
# gdisk -l /dev/sda
The gdisk command has to be run for each drive.
Be very careful when using dd, clonzilla etc to backup a partition or drive. If the
system is rebooted with duplicate uuids present and uuids are being used to select
the partition, which partition will be mounted can not be reliably predicted. Likewise with labels if using labels for selecting partitions to mount. If a Universally unique identifier (uuid) is not unique within a system, then it is not
suitable for it's intended purpose, and may cause really difficult to debug problems.
I have tested the restoring by reversing the directory order.

Well it is good practice to have backup off system and better yet off
site in case of disaster.
Having said that, I keep a /hotbu partition on my systems which contains
a rsync of the current "/" install, and I have a
SIIG SUPERSPEED USB 3.0 to SATA 3.5" Enclosure with a terabyte hard drive
for off system backup. I also keep dvd backup of desired data not on
the install dvd.
I also keep a system rescue cd handy from https://www.system-rescue.org/ Download page has instructions to create bootable usb drive.

At first glance I would say yes, since I have seen messages in the dev/QA mailing list that all isos work in a virtual box guest and QA does a pretty good job in testing on real hardware.
I could not say since I did network installs.
You are not providing any information about what was selected and where
the problem occurs.
My install was xfce DM only and all package groups with Tainted and Nonfree 64 bit only. I would suggest the same just to see if you get past the error.
If so, then add whatever DM (desktop Manager) you like, then add 32 bit media if you need to install any 32 bit apps.

First thing I'd do is try copying the iso image to a different usb
drive, making
sure the copy is finished. The isodumper application works well for
this. If using
dd you need to ensure the copying has finished and no process is still
in a device
wait state.
