• black screen on KDE

From William Unruh@2:250/1 to All on Mon Jun 29 00:38:49 2020
I and my son (different computers) have had problems with Plasma/KDE sometimes. One logs in
to the plasma login screen, and what comes up is a black screen with a
cursor on it. Sometimes the icons on our desktop will appear on the
black screen, sometimes the previous opened windows (from last session)
will appear, sometimes just a little window a the top will apper.
Usually if one gets out of that (eg alt ctrl Bksp Bksp ) and logs in
again everything is fine. Sometimes it takes two or three attempts.
Is there anything I can do to make it (kde) behave?

Mageia 7.1 updated. Asus UX333 (intel based video) Dell XPS13 9370
    (Intel based video).

If this is an intermittent problem, I'd be looking at whether or not the power supply provides enough amperage, and also possibly temperatures if this is on reboot rather then initial boot.

For the power, try disconnecting anything that can be disconnected (non critial
    drives, usb devices, etc.).

They are laptop machines, with nothing plugged in (or maybe a usb
stick). So I sort of doubt it is a power problem. I guess temperature
    might be a possibility.

I would think a temperature problem would show up after the first boot
    of the day.

For example first boot works, any boot there afterwards would be problematic.

I would also expect doing a lot of cpu intensive work would cause loss
of video if the heat problem is cpu.

How old are your hard drives?
Seems like your configuration files are going missing.

SSD. One month and 3.5 years.

They have not gone missing since on next (or next-next) boot they will
be there again. They are somehow not accessed sometimes. Ie,
it seems that there is some sort of race condition which Plasma
sometimes loses. Or X sometimes gets confused.
