• startup stanza

    From faeychild@2:250/0 to All on Mon Feb 24 20:50:29 2020

    Over the period of the many years of updates and upgrades, the startup
    stanza wave has come and gone.

    This morning during the reboot, after the latest update, the shutdown
    chord played .
    I realized that I hadn't heard that in quiet a while - but it is back.

    There is always a disquieting element of erraticness.

    My taskbar net-applet has not worked since many updates.

    If nothing else, I would try creating a test account, say junk,
    log out of faeychild, into junk and verify it is not a user problem.

    On the off chance that you already have a test account, I would either
    use mcc to delete/add it again to have a clean test account setup,
    or use cli commands or script to reset the test account for testing.

    Example script follows:
    ----------8<----------8<----cut below this line------8<----------8<
    #!/bin/bash
    #*******************************************************
    #* reset_junk - Reset test account to day one settings #*******************************************************

    export PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin\
    :/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin

    _app=${0##*/}
    _exe=$0

    _count=0
    _tester_uid="junk"
    _tester_home=""

    _count=$(grep --count ^$_tester_uid: /etc/passwd)

    if [ $_count -eq 0 ] ; then
    echo "
    Fatal error 1 from $_exe
    No $_tester_uid in /etc/passwd
    "
    exit 1
    fi

    _tester_home="$(grep ^$_tester_uid: /etc/passwd | cut -d: -f6)"

    if [ $(id --user --name ) != "root" ] ; then
    echo "
    Fatal error 2 from $_exe
    You must be root to run $_app
    "
    exit 2
    fi

    rsync --delete -aAHSXxv /etc/skel/ $_tester_home
    chown --recursive $_tester_uid:$_tester_uid $_tester_home

    I didn't think to try junk and forgot again this morning (memory)

    Not that it's a problem, just surprising to have it back

    I had a quick look in start and shutdown- nothing there.
    it's initiated by something.

    When the video process is finished I'll switch to junk; it will be there

    Can you touch type, Bits??

    Yup! Form "SSA 1099" arrived here 11 Jan 2020. Last year, it
    arrived 1/18/19.

    I filed mine and for the farm last week.

    I'm still waiting for a 1099-DIV from an investment house - their
    website said they had mailed it on 2/15/20, so I called yesterday

    I think most securities and investment houses have your tax documents available on the web. They have to keep records on your accounts in computerized form for internal use, and -- controls on security of data
    aside -- it is a simple routine to convert that to tax record form.

    I have long refused to accept such records and documents via e-mail or website, for security reasons, but nowdays they put them on a website
    whether you will look at them there or not.

    As another poster mentioned, Good to you you again!

    Bingo

    it is a simple routine to convert that to tax record form.

    I've got the monthly (paper) statements, but can't match up the
    numbers on them with what turns up on the 1099-DIV (and 1099-MISC).

    I have long refused to accept such records and documents via e-mail

    I'm told that's the case, but you need an account name/number and
    for "security" reasons, the number is different from the paper
    account numbers.

    If the problem is cataracts,several related to me have had the surgery
    and it has turned out uniformly superb. Yes, there is always a
    possibility of making things worse, but in this case small (need to get information on who does a good job of course, but almost all are good)
    and cost is not great even if insurance or health program does not cover.

    Glaucoma is a different problem. I cannot address that one, due to

    Investment services are provided by my bank, as are my credit cards. The
    bank provides an online portal to each from the online banking site. And
    like it or not, my bank by necessity knows enough about me to be a
    problem if there's a breach. But there I'm stuck. The only alternative
    would be stuffing my mattress.

    While I got along for years before there was such a thing, online
    banking has become almost a necessity now. It's just too convenient to
    be able to do my banking without the 15-minute drive to the closest
    branch office.

    So far, I too have had a credit card replaced twice. Once happened about
    ten years ago, the other just last year. No idea where the criminals got
    the information. Could have been anywhere I used the card. Or, as the
    recent Equifax debacle has exposed, you don't even have to use the card
    to have the number stolen.

    So with faeychild the lack of right click menu is obviously one of my

    Did some more checking... On my machine, Mr Clunky, the inept user that borrows it from time to time, is also affected. However, another install
    on the same hardware that I use for testing purposes is not. Also, I
    don't see it on another install on other hardware. That, of course,
    means that it will be VERY difficult for the devs to recreate, and fix.

    There was a bug filed for this problem against Mageia 6, Bug 22218. I
    have updated it with my information, and changed the version to M7. Feel
    free to add some comments on your own situation.

Feel free to add some comments on your own situation.

    I have on occasion re-installed several times on the same hardware over several days and found that each install was subtly different- which is
    not at all logical and I used to wonder if it was my perception failing.

    Since that last update I discovered that I could no longer write to my
    USB sticks.

    ls -la didn't show up anything enlightening
    So I re-chowned them - ALL. Now it's fine

    I still have difficulty believing it happened.

    Problem for me - eyesight has gone South.

    If the problem is cataracts,several related to me have had the
    surgery and it has turned out uniformly superb.

    Several years ago, I lost partial vision (pixels gone) due to
    a brain tumor which crushed the optic nerve. At the time, the
    retinalogist warned me that I was susceptible to Macular
    Degeneration. There are two versions: dry ("preventable" with
    extra vitamins/mineral, but untreatable), and wet (no prevention,
    but "controllable" with off-label use of a statin drug every 8
    weeks). Result acts like a jig-saw puzzle with many (random)
    pieces missing. Plays hell with reading speed.

    Glaucoma is a different problem.

    Yup, but my pressures are "normal".

    I intentionally don't have web accounts. Too many data-breaches
    for my taste.

    Investment services are provided by my bank, as are my credit cards.

    My wife and I have brokerage accounts with the outfits that
    provided the service to the companies we worked for.

    And like it or not, my bank by necessity knows enough about me to be
    a problem if there's a breach.

    I've seen some rather gross stupidity in access control, but the
    financial trade is hardly the only one with those issues.

    without the 15-minute drive to the closest branch office.

    One of the banks we use is a two hour plane ride (never mind the
    ground times) away. Actually, until ~9 years ago, I had accounts
    (banking and credit cards) in Japan and Germany because I would have
    business trips often enough to make it worth the (MAJOR) hassle.

    No idea where the criminals got the information. Could have been
    anywhere I used the card.

    That's the usual problem. Think it was two years ago, someone
    got remote access to a chain's book-keeping system and inhaled all
    credit-card transaction data. "Chip" cards supposedly reduce this
    risk, but that assumes you never need to "swipe" the card because
    the chip-reader box won't read the chip.
